TAMPA - Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib turned himself in to Texas authorities today on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Talib, 25, posted $25,000 bail and was released.

"What will happen next is we file our case with Dallas County, then that case will be presented to a Dallas County grand jury and they will choose whether to indict or not," Garland police spokesman Joe Harn said.

The aggravated assault charge, a second-degree felony, carries a punishment of five to 20 years in prison, police said.

On Tuesday, Garland police issued a warrant for Talib's arrest. Police said that on March 21 he fired shots at his sister's boyfriend and attempted to pistol-whip him. Talib has cooperated with investigators, police said.

Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said in a statement Tuesday that the team was "deeply troubled" by the charge against Talib. "Due to current labor circumstances, we will withhold any further comment or action."

Talib's mother, Okolo Talib, 58, also faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She turned herself in to police Tuesday morning and, at the time of her booking, also was charged with felon in possession of a firearm due to a previous conviction, police said. Bail was set at $30,000.

The investigation began when police were called about 7:30 p.m. March 21 to a disturbance at the Garland home of Aqib Talib's sister, Saran, and her longtime boyfriend, Shannon Billings, 40. Fighting and gunshots were heard, investigators said.

According to arrest warrants for Aqib and Okolo Talib:

Aqib Talib confronted Billings, pointed a 9 mm handgun at him and told Billings he was going to hit him with it.

Aqib Talib swung the gun at Billings but missed. The gun slipped out of his hand and struck a fence. Billings picked up the gun, and it was jammed and inoperable, he told detectives.

Aqib Talib tried to fight Billings. Then Okolo Talib arrived at the home, at 942 Green Pond Drive, jumped out of her vehicle holding a handgun and shot at Billings.

Police said Aqib Talib got the gun from his mother and also shot several times at Billings.

Billings, who is a registered sex offender in Texas, was found by police outside the home.

Billings was listed as a suspect in a disturbance at the home earlier in the day. He was taken into custody for the earlier incident and charged with assault and interference with an emergency phone call, police said.

In August 2009, Aqib Talib was arrested after the Florida Highway Patrol said he punched cab driver David Duggan, 50, while riding from a St. Petersburg club to a Tampa hotel.

Talib pleaded not guilty, and the case was dismissed after he entered into a pretrial diversion program and took anger management classes. Talib reached a civil settlement with Duggan.

After that incident, the NFL suspended Talib without pay for Tampa Bay's opening game last season and fined him an additional game check for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

As a rookie in 2008, Talib got into a physical confrontation with a teammate at the NFL's rookie symposium. Prior to the 2009 season, Talib got angry at teammate Donald Penn during a voluntary offseason workout and swung a helmet at him, but missed and hit former teammate Torrie Cox, causing several facial injuries.

In November after the team's loss at Baltimore, Talib got into an expletive-laced confrontation with an NFL game official and was physically restrained by teammates outside the team's locker room. Talib was upset with a penalty called on a teammate.

At the time, Talib said that he had to control his emotions.

"It's just an emotional game, and I just flared up," Talib said in December.
